When to travel

January

Zanzibar – Tanzania

High Summer Average Temperature for January 27 Celsius 80 Fahrenheit

Diving off Zanzibar.

Zanzibar is an island off the Indian Coast of Tanzania and averages only five rainy days for the month of January. The south of the main island offers the best diving conditions while the north has the best sunset views. For exceptional reef diving and snorkeling, head to the exclusive outlying islands of Pemba, Mafia and Mnemba. Zanzibar is also home to Stone Town, a World Heritage Site with plenty to see and do. A beach holiday on Zanzibar is the perfect way to relax after the early morning wake-up calls of a Southern Serengeti safari.

When to book

Because the island has almost perfect weather, it is very popular so secure the best accommodation as soon as you can. Sought-after places like Pemba and Mafia have a very amount of accommodation available – there are no large resorts here.

February

Ngorongoro Crater – Tanzania

High Summer Average Temperature for February 22 Celsius 71 Fahrenheit

Some of the most superb Big 5 game viewing in the world

Ngorongoro has very easy game viewing because the animals never venture beyond the Crater’s walls. It is generally very busy with avid safari goers but February is one of its quieter times, meaning more space to yourself and better rates.

When to book

The Crater is very popular so don’t leave it until the last minute. Aim to have your safari planned by the New Year. DSM Tours & Safaris will help to make good and enjoyable safari itineraries.

March

Southern Serengeti – Tanzania

High Summer Average Temperature for March 23 Celsius 73 Fahrenheit

Seeing the mega herds of the Wildebeest Migration begin to move northwards.

By March, the thousands of babies that ‘dropped’ in January and February are strong enough to join their parents on their trans-savannah trek. It is also Green Season in Tanzania, meaning low rates and low visitor numbers but high opportunities for photographers.

When to book

If you find you can travel at the last minute, enquire about a Serengeti safari as availability is generally good. Like the Sabi Sands though, the park may fill up with self-drivers and local families if the Easter holidays fall in March rather than April.

April

Visiting the Northern Circuit of Tanzania in April

The wildebeest migration in April

The Great Migration of the Serengeti is still in full force in April, albeit in a different location. Because the Serengeti is so massive, month-by-month observers and scientists have picked out the most likely locations that the Migration will go past – April’s being the Seronera region of Serengeti National Park.

May

Visiting the Northern Circuit of Tanzania in May

The wildebeest migration in May

One of the best things about the Great Migration is that it is, essentially, a year-round process. The giant herds of this iconic African antelope do not go away, they simply move. The wet season has made food plentiful, and you are likely to see the herds grazing as they migrate.

June

Average Temperature For June | 21 Celcius | 70 Farenheit

The wildebeest migration in May

Witness thousands of wildebeest crossing the Grumeti River during their annual migration around the Serengeti-Masai Mara ecosystem.
